The Ecofarm research project in North Kordofan state, Sudan started its activities in July 2007.The objective of the project is to test some of the Ecofarm basket of improved technologies to verify their suitability to the traditional small-scale farmers in Kordofan and Darfur states in western Sudan. The main purpose of these technologies is to enable poor resource farmers to reduce production risk, better manage resources, increase productivity and hence improve their food security.
Technologies tested on-farm and on-station include seed priming and micro fertilizing of food and cash crops, improving the use of cowpea, Acacia Senegal intercropping, sheep fattening, mineral blocks supplementation, improving feed quality and supply and provision of some cash and local tree species.
Other activities of the project include technology transfer, training and capacity building for producers through Farmers Field Schools (FFS), field days, and extension meetings and visits.
The project is implemented by CARE Sudan, El Obeid sub office and the Dryland Research Centre (ARC) at El Obeid Research Station.
The Ecofarm approach is also applied and studied in Mali and in Ethiopia. For more information on this approach, please visit this page.
