Global Mechanism (GM) signs USD 3.8 million agreement with Norway
01.07.2008

The Global Mechanism (GM) visited Norway in April to discuss Integrated Financing Strategies (IFSs) for the implementation of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The discussions with the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norad, Noragric, the Development Fund and the Drylands Coordination Group (DCG) led to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs signing a contribution of USD 3.8 Million in support of the GM’s initiative. The IFS is meant to guide the process towards the establishment of an investment framework for UNCCD implementation, by mobilizing a blend of financial resources, including from innovative sources.

The discussions held in Norway also addressed the following issues: the GM in the political contect of the UNCCD, climate change issues in relation to land degradation, and the important role of subsistence farmers as economic agents in this setting.

Here is the full press release by the GM.
