Aware of its responsibilities in terms of good governance and sustainable management of natural resources, and monitoring the impact of recently adopted environmental policies (environmental policy of the ECOWAS PCAE), programs and projects implemented in the subregion, CILSS established an information system and environment monitoring (SIVE) in the Sahel. This arrangement will complement and complete the regional mechanism for monitoring and management of food crises, CILSS who, as part of its extension to all countries in the ECOWAS region, will contribute to the implementation of the priority Program "Prevention and management of food crises and other natural disasters (PCACN) of ECOWAP / PDDAA.
As part of the operationalization of this system, a study was launched in April 2008 with the aim of:
- To update the status of devices for monitoring and environmental alert at CILSS countries members level;
- Identify at the subregional level adequate biophysical and socio-economic indicators for the establishment of functional early warning and monitoring long-term dynamics of the environment in a consistent and harmonized manner.
At the end of the study, the PICDCS has to validate the results by its Member States and partner institutions. This justifies the holding of this workshop.
