The Third World Water Report notes that climate change, widespread mismanagement and increasing demand for energy tighten the grip on the world’s evaporating water supplies. Also, the First Meeting of the Bureau of the 17th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD17) recognized that water security is a major future challenge. Consequently, it is imperative for the UNCCD to place an urgent focus on developing and promoting a viable water policy that recognizes inter-linkages and crosscutting water-related issues.

Against this backdrop, a draft UNCCD water policy document was prepared, and a two-day workshop to review the document will be held on 8 and 9 June 2009 at the UNCCD secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The workshop will bring together representatives of country Parties who provided comments to the UNCCD draft Water Policy document taking into account geographical representation.
