On-Farm Storage Studies in Eritrea
DCG Report 28
Size: 952 kb

Adugna Haile, Dagnew G. Selassie, Biniam Zereyacob, and Biniam Abraham

According to FAO’s (1985) estimation around 500 million people throughout the world suffer from mal-nourishment. FAO has also estimated that storage pests and lack of proper storage methods destroy over 200 million tons of grains each year. This illustrates that food shortage in our world can be solved not only by increased food production but also by reducing food losses in storage.

In Eritrea there is a need for more information on storage pests and the nature of damage in the store. Such information is very important for food security and food supply planning of the country. With this background, University of Asmara, MOA and Drylands Coordination Group (DCG) have designed a study of grain storage systems, pest conditions and assessments of traditional control methods in the country.

The main objectives of the study are to:

  • Study the different storage methods used in different agro-ecological areas of the country,
  • Study the major storage pests, determine germination rate and weight loss of the produce and
  • Study the traditional and other control practices used in the different agro-ecological zones of the country.
