With the changes underway in Mali, including the effective implementation of decentralization, the dry lands coordination group (DCG), sponsored a workshop on decentralization and civil society strengthening in collaboration with different. In order to reach a rational sharing of experiences and reflect on alternatives and new approaches in the field of coherent and sustainable development, the workshop focused on four major themes:
- The institutional framework of decentralization, the environment and food security and the participation/involvement of NGOs and other civil society stakeholders;
- The experiences of DCG members and partners in implementing decentralization;
- The experiences of other stakeholders in the field of decentralization;
- Reflex ions of the groups on the strategies of intervention and strengthening of civil society in a decentralized context.
The main objective of the workshop was an exchange of experiences between stakeholders about their role in civil society and their role in the process of decentralization in Mali. Decentralization plays an important role in the area of institutional development. The specific objectives were as follows:
- Define a strategy of intervention for NGOs in the context of decentralization for sustainable development putting an emphasis on food security and the environment.
- Define an approach on strengthening Civil Society in a rural community.
- Improve participants’ knowledge on the practical evolution of implementing decentralization in Mali, through an exchange of experiences among stakeholders.
