With this workshop the DCG in Ethiopia aims to use CARE Ethiopia’s project in the Awash Valley as a point of entry for a workshop on conflict resolution, where focus will be on resource-use conflicts. The Awash Valley represents a good example of a resource-use conflict where major development schemes have been launched on the pastoralists’ land to extract surplus for national benefits, without the consideration of negative side effects of these programs on the environment as well as on the population in the area. In the Awash Valley there is an intense inter-sectoral resource-use conflict generated by the interaction of pastoralism, wildlife and irrigated agriculture.
The participants from all DCG member organizations were invited to present papers, in order to be able to draw on a number of different cases in the group- and plenary discussions. The objectives of the workshop were to enable participants to:
- analyse their areas of intervention in order to identify potential conflicts
- identify underlying causes to potential and real conflicts
- get a realistic understanding of personal/organisational responsibilities/possibilities of preventing conflicts and of roles in management/resolution of real conflicts
- defining tools and strategies for action.
