| Female Headed Households in Tigray, Ethiopia |
 |
A Study Review.
DCG Report 35
Size: 584 kb
Fiona Meehan
Tigray is the northernmost national regional state in Ethiopia, with a population of a little over four million people, of whom over 80 percent live in the rural area, predominantly dependent on small holder agriculture for their livelihoods. Over 30 percent of the population are estimated to be de facto female headed households, although the proportion varies from area to area. The high prevalence of female headed households is related to loss of male combatants in both the civil war which ended in 1991, and the more recent Ethio-Eritrean conflict; a traditionally high age gap between wives and husbands, leading to a higher number of widows compared to widowers; a higher likelihood of widowed men remarrying compared to widowed women; and traditional migration patterns, resulting in de facto female headed households even where legal marriage still exists.
A pre-study was conducted to gather information on what relevant studies had already been produced or were in progress. The overall purpose of the study was:
-
To document the existence of studies and available information sources relevant to increasing knowledge and understanding about the situation of female headed households in Tigray, Ethiopia, with a particular focus on household livelihoods.
Specific objectives were to:
Another objective was subsequently added:
The main focus is on female headed households in Tigray. The scope of the review also encompasses a brief look at national level policy initiatives and some studies, involving Tigray and/or other areas of Ethiopia, which may be relevant and helpful in sharing experience, and providing comparative baseline and other data.
