UNCCD workshop in Rome
Date: January 19th-20th
Location: Rome, Italy
Contact: Lauren Naville, info at drylands-group.org

A member of the secretariat of DCG Norway attended a workshop in Italy organized by the UNCCD secretariat and the Italian Association of NGOs with support from the Italian government. This workshop entitled "Combating desertification and poverty in drylands: Promoting the participation of civil society and decentralized cooperation in the framework of the UNCCD implementation" discussed mechanisms to enhance the participation of civil society in the implementation of the convention while looking at the National Action Programs, the donor support, and exploring mechanism of consultation to enhance cooperation between various stakeholders.

DCG participated at the meeting with another member of eniD and made a presentation on some work that has been undertaken by DCG and eniD on civil society participation in Africa and Europe and how to address this status in light of the current situation of the UNCCD/ NAP implementation. The presentation also made some remarks regarding networking and the involvement of different actors and ended the presentation with questions for the audience.

Here is the presentation and the manuscript that were presented on January 20th 2006. Here are also background documents (1, 2, 4) for the workshop. The UNCCD website also contains all the presentations made during this event. Finally, here is the report by the UNCCD secretariat on the workshop and the NGO declaration made at the end of the meeting.
