A joint international conference will take place from December 17-19th 2006 in Algiers (Algeria) focusing on policy underpinnings that are needed for successful strategies in dryland communities. This conference, organized in the framework of the International Year of Deserts and Desertification (IYDD), will focus on the following issues while basing itself on outcomes from other events organized under the IYDD:

  • Improved policy focus on desertification, mobilization of resources and capacity
    •
  • New initiatives to mainstream desertification issues into national and international policy processes
    •
  • Improved knowledge management initiatives
    •
  • Improved political viability, design and implementation of national-level initiatives
    •
  • Interlinkages between desertification, climate change, biodiversity and other global environmental issues.
