The main economic activities in Mali which are essentially agriculture, pastoralism, fishing, industry, fluvial transport and production of energy take place in the basin of the Niger River. However, the River is subject to periodic droughts these last years, leading to a decrease in the water flow, the drying up of the lakes, the reduction of the expanse and duration of the floods periods, the advance of sand dunes in the major bed of the River, the degradation of the vegetation, and the scarcity of some animal species threatening at the same time the health and survival of the river-side residents.
This project which is implemented from April until July 2006 aims at making a report synthesising and identifying problems and constraints, as well as relevant actors, treaties, rules and regulations with regard to the management of the Niger River and explaining the linkages between the management of the river and food security in Mali. The contents and findings of the report will make it possible to inform, sensitise and build the capacity of member NGOs of DCG over the issue of the management of the Niger River and discuss how DCG can integrate this issue in its consultation and sensitisation activities. The project is implemented by the NGO AVPIP.
