This paper examines the causes and dynamics of poverty among pastoral populations in Africa and argues that sub-Saharan countries will not be able to achieve the Millennium Development Goals unless policy makers increase both their commitment to address the vulnerability of pastoral livelihoods as well as pursue strategies to support alternative income generation activities of pastoral people.
