The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)

Support to the follow-up and implementation of the UNCCD is one of the elements of DCG's work even though emphasis on this Convention is no longer seen as a priority focus area for the network. This convention is unique in the way that it links environment and development with the ultimate goal of increasing food security and alleviating poverty in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas around the world. The UNCCD is a common obligation and goal of implementation for the countries which have ratified the convention. The convention therefore creates a fundament for national and international work in promoting development in drylands. For more information about the convention, please visit the UNCCD’s official website: www.unccd.int.

In its past strategy, DCG focused on the UNCCD as an international arena for policy work and at the national level to support the implementation of National Action Programs (NAPs). In its new strategy (DCG strategy for 2007-2011), DCG broadens its focus with regard to policy work and thus no longer focuses exclusively on the UNCCD but also on other relevant Conventions and policy documents at the international and national level.

A Conference of the Parties (COP) meeting is held on a biennial basis and reviews the convention as the supreme decision-making body. COP reviews reports that were submitted by the parties to the UNCCD regarding their implementation status. Based on these reports, COP makes suggestions and can modify the convention. In order to guide the COP in the implementation of the convention, CRIC was established.

Each year a Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) meeting is held and includes input from different countries in the form of reports. Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Mali have  submitted their reports for 2004 on the implementation of the convention.
